A2P 10DLC: The Registration That Breaks Most GoHighLevel Accounts

If your GoHighLevel texts are not arriving, this is almost always why. A practical guide to registration, rejection and recovery.

What A2P 10DLC actually is

A2P 10DLC stands for application-to-person messaging over ten-digit long codes. In plain terms: US carriers require any business sending automated texts from a normal local number to register who they are and what they intend to send. Unregistered traffic is filtered, throttled or blocked outright, and crucially the carrier does not tell you. Your messages show as sent inside GoHighLevel and simply never arrive.

Why this breaks accounts quietly

The failure is silent, which is what makes it expensive. An agency builds a beautiful missed-call text-back workflow, tests it on their own phone where it works because their carrier is lenient, and hands over. Three months later the client cannot understand why response rates are terrible. Nothing in the interface says blocked. The messages are just gone.

The two registrations you need

Registration happens in two stages and both must pass before you can reliably send.

  • Brand registration: your legal entity, EIN or equivalent tax ID, registered address and website. This verifies the business exists.
  • Campaign registration: what you intend to send, with real sample messages, your opt-in mechanism and evidence of it. This verifies you have permission.

The rejection reasons that waste the most time

Campaign rejections are far more common than brand rejections, and nearly all of them come from the same handful of mistakes.

  • Sample messages that do not include the business name and a clear opt-out instruction
  • A stated opt-in method the reviewer cannot verify, for example claiming web form consent when the form has no consent checkbox
  • A privacy policy that does not mention SMS at all, or a website with no privacy policy
  • Mismatched details between brand and campaign, especially a legal name that differs from the trading name on the site
  • Use case selected as marketing when the traffic is really customer care, or the reverse, which changes the throughput you are granted

Fix the website before you submit

Most rejections are actually website problems. Before submitting, make sure your site carries a privacy policy that explicitly mentions SMS, states that message and data rates may apply, and describes how to opt out. Your lead forms need a visible consent checkbox that is not pre-ticked, with wording that says what the person is agreeing to receive. Doing this first turns a two-round rejection cycle into a single clean approval.

Timelines and what to do while you wait

Brand registration is often same-day to 48 hours. Campaign approval typically takes one to two weeks and is entirely outside your control once submitted. Submit on day one of any build. In the meantime you can build and test everything else, use email as the primary channel, and run voice without restriction, since A2P governs SMS rather than calls.

Throughput, and why it matters later

Approval is not binary. You are granted a message throughput tier based on your brand vetting score, which determines how many messages per second you can send. A low tier is fine for conversational follow-up and painful for a reactivation campaign to eleven thousand contacts, where the send can stretch over hours. If you plan bulk campaigns, pay for enhanced brand vetting up front rather than discovering the ceiling mid-campaign.

What this should cost

Registration carries small carrier fees, typically a one-off brand fee and a modest monthly campaign fee. Handling it as a service should cost a few hundred dollars, not a few thousand. Treat it as compliance rather than an upsell. Any agency presenting A2P as a premium add-on is charging you for the privilege of their work functioning.

Ask a question
Can I avoid A2P by using a toll-free number?

Toll-free numbers use a separate verification process, not no process. Unverified toll-free traffic gets filtered too, and toll-free numbers convert worse for local businesses because recipients read them as call centres. Register properly instead.

What happens if I just send anyway?

Some messages arrive, most eventually do not, and your delivery rate degrades over time as carriers build a picture of the sender. Because there is no error surfaced, you will likely blame the copy, the audience or the platform long before you suspect registration.

Does A2P apply outside the United States?

The 10DLC framework is US-specific, but most markets have an equivalent. Canada applies CASL consent rules, the UK and Australia have sender ID registration and consent requirements, and the underlying principle is the same everywhere: prove who you are and that people agreed to hear from you.
